Sources

Factory VIN uses public government vehicle sources. Each has a boundary.

Factory data

NHTSA vPIC provides VIN decoding. It can leave fields blank and does not reliably resolve trim or packages. We display useful returned fields and never invent the rest.

Recall campaigns

A recall campaign is a manufacturer recall notice that may cover a group of vehicles.

US recall notices come from the documented NHTSA year, make, and model endpoint. Canadian recall notices come from Transport Canada's Vehicle Recalls Database, under the Open Government Licence, Canada. A compact, dated copy of that official monthly dataset is bundled as a fallback when the live campaign API is unavailable.

These sources match recall notices by year, make, and model. They cannot determine whether an exact VIN is included or whether its repair is complete.

Canadian efficiency ratings

Natural Resources Canada fuel-consumption ratings provide model-level fuel use, energy use, emissions, and electric-range values where available. A decoded VIN may match several configurations because the VIN does not always identify trim or transmission.

Provincial checks

Province and territory pages use reviewed links from the responsible registry, public insurer, transportation authority, or official open-data catalogue. Factory VIN identifies whether a source is shown in the page, aggregate context, or an official site you must visit. A public form is not treated as an API.

U.S. efficiency configurations

FuelEconomy.gov Web Services provides public EPA configuration records. Factory VIN queries those services with decoded year, make, and model and ranks possible configurations using decoded engine, drivetrain, and fuel fields. The result is not exact installed equipment.

U.S. state and territory guidance

U.S. jurisdiction pages use reviewed official authority links for title-and-transfer guidance. They do not display individual state records. National exact-VIN, theft/salvage, and history-provider checks continue at NHTSA, NICB, or the U.S. Department of Justice NMVTIS provider directory.

What we do not query

We do not scrape exact-VIN recall forms, provincial or state registry forms, NICB, IBC, CPIC, NMVTIS, Carfax, Bumper, ClearVIN, or other history products. Links to next checks are plain exits.

Affiliation

Factory VIN is not a government website and is not affiliated with NHTSA, the U.S. DOT, Transport Canada, NICB, IBC, or ICBC.
